Introduction to the New Jersey Health Information Network

NJII is paving the way for the future of healthcare via the New Jersey Health Information Network (NJHIN), which facilitates data transfer between healthcare providers, patients, and the state. The NJHIN is funded by the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and the Department of Human Services (NJDHS), and NJII is the state-designated entity appointed to operate and manage the network. Our goal is to reduce healthcare costs by creating a fully interoperable healthcare system throughout the state that benefits healthcare facilities of all types, as well as their patients and staff. Using advanced networking technology and data analytics, NJHIN can reduce medical errors, improve data quality, and make healthcare more efficient and cost-effective for patients and facilities.

There are currently more than 21,000 providers connected to the NJHIN, as well as 960+ long term care facilities, assisted living facilities, and others being onboarded constantly. Our Master Patient Index (MPI), which acts as a Common Identifier across all NJHIN participants, contains over 14 million health information records. There is also no charge to participate in the NJHIN. With a continuously growing number of use cases, the NJHIN becomes a more capable utility with every passing year. Admission, Data, and Transfer Alerts (ADT), Electronic Consent Management (eConsent), and Emergency Medical Services Registry (EMS) are just a few of the many use cases available to those participating in the NJHIN. The NJHIN has also achieved CMS Medicaid Enterprise System (MES) certification, as well as HITRUST certification, which places NJII in an elite group of organizations worldwide that have earned this certification.

By choosing to participate in the NJHIN, your facility or provider is not only gaining the many functions and use cases offered by the network, but is also helping to cut down costs, increase efficiency, and facilitate a fully functional healthcare system throughout New Jersey.
